The Literacy project

Read Aloud

“Back in 2020, during the lockdown, I found solace and learning through reading aloud with my mother. That experience inspired me to extend this joy to others, so I started reading to a few kids online. As word spread, volunteers – friends and family – joined in, and thus, Read Aloud, our first program under Read to India, was born.” - Gauri

The practice of reading out loud to children has a myriad of benefits. Reading aloud makes the invisible act of reading visible. For the Read Aloud Programme, a volunteer is partnered one-on-one with a school student for a rewarding weekly read-aloud experience. The relationship typically lasts for one month and can often extend for an entire year. The simple act of reading aloud to a child once a week, over time, can have a profound impact on the child’s future. It generates children’s enthusiasm for books and reading and helps improve children’s fundamental literacy skills. Modeling the fluency, expression, and tone of their mentors will provide the students with a framework for improving their reading skills. A total of 500 children engaged with Read to India for Read Aloud sessions.

Classroom libraries

“There is no friend as loyal as a book” - Ernest Hemingway
Read to India recognizes the value of being around books. To encourage and support curiosity for science, we took the initiative to establish classroom libraries in schools for underprivileged children. This unique initiative aimed at providing easy access to science education. Under this project, we curate Book Bags, named Science Thela, filled with carefully selected science textbooks and workbooks that can help to expand students’ knowledge and understanding of the world through a scientific perspective.

Read to India has built classroom libraries in 50+ schools in rural regions and NGOs of Rajasthan.

Online Classes

Individuals at all walks of life collaborated with Read to India and volunteered to take regular online classes for students from underprivileged backgrounds. Children from grade 1st to 11th received guidance in Math, Science and English. Yoga, Art, Dance, Singing and Creative writing classes were conducted on a weekly basis for all the students engaged with Read to India’s REACH project.

  • A total of 250+ students benefited from these online classes starting from April 2020 to November 2022.
  • A total of around 1,000 hours were dedicated by our volunteers, both teachers and students, to support the education of underprivileged kids.
  • A total of around 600 hours were dedicated to engage our students in extracurricular classes of Yoga, Art and training in dancing, singing, and creative writing.

Digital Literacy

As part of our commitment to educational equity, we ran a digital empowerment program for women in partnership with Institut Français, Barefoot College, and the Ambassade de France.

Through intensive workshops on digital literacy and rights, we equipped women - especially those without prior digital access - with essential skills in language, internet safety, and low-cost tech use. Over a 3-month period, our trainers worked closely with first-generation learners, including young students, working-class women, and single-parent families from communities like Sitaram Kiacchi Basti.

These workshops were more than training sessions - they were spaces where women build confidence, claim their rights, and gain tools to participate fully in a digital world.
